friday's feast

Feast One Hundred & Seventy

Appetizer
What is your favorite carnival/amusement park ride?
Oh, I *so* cannot pick just one. Here are my top picks: Tower of Terror in Walt Disney World, Pirates of the Carribean at Disneyland, The Indiana Jones Ride at Disneyland, Everst in Walt Disney World.

Soup
How do you react in uncomfortable social situations?
I usually try to move the conversation along to something more benign or laugh it off.

Salad
On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, how much do you enjoy discussing deep, philosophical topics?
Meh. About 2. I deal with enough heavy topics at work. Don't need to fill my off time with that stuff, too.

Main Course
Did you get a flu shot this year? If not, do you plan to?
Heck yes I got a flu shot! The last time I had a flu was when I was in college and I could actually spend a week on the couch practically comatose. There is no way I could have sick time now, unless I was actually admitted to the hospital. So I get the flu shot every year. Acutally, my department acutally makes sure we all get one. One of my huge pet peeves is people who swear they get sick from the flu shot. It can't make you sick. If you get sick the week after you get the flu shot, it's not because it's not working. It's because our immune systems actually take 4-6 weeks to develop an immunity to the things that were in the flu shot and you were going to get sick anyway.

Dessert
Approximately how many hours per week do you spend watching television?
Hmm... it varies greatly depending on how much I work and what else is going on. Had a busy week: worked late Monday, got the Christmas tree Tuesday, had an evening meeting Wednesday, and had my birthday dinner last night. This week I'd say about 5-6.

fun with memes

I saw this on my friend Jan's blog and it looked like fun!

List eight things you're passionate about
1. Sun protection. Melanoma is a largely preventable disease.
2. Saying "Merry Christmas" this year instead of "Happy Holidays", especially after Hannukah is over.
3. Excercising, in whatever form you can stomach. Good for the body and the mind.
4. Being courteous of others. We don't live on this planet alone...
5. Living as a Christian... even though I don't do it so well sometimes.
6. Creating an anti-drama zone in my house, especially around the holidays.
7. Living within one's budget. If you're not, shrink your budget or get a different/additional job. Debt sucks.
8. 2nd amendment rights.

Eight things want to do before I die
1. Be fluent in another language (or two).
2. Be a mom.
3. See the castle and cathedral commissioned by my ancestors in what is formerly known as Prussia.
4. Go to the Olympics.
5. Own a home.
6. Become a competent surgeon.
7. Learn how to ride a motorcycle. Just in case there is an emergency or the apocalypse happens and that's all we have. ;-)
8. Try snowshoeing.

Eight things I say often
1. "Dressings come off on postoperative day 2!"
2. "You have got to be f*%king kidding me."
3. "No. Way."
4. "Dude!"
5. "How's your pain today?"
6. "All bleeding stops... eventually."
7. "What's for dinner?"
8. "Hello, squeezy kitties!"

Eight songs I could listen to over and over
1. In the Bleak Midwinter
2. Skating from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special
3. Tessie -- sort of a Red Sox theme song
4. Canned Heat -- the song at the end of Napoleon Dynamite
5. Crazy Train by Ozzy
6. Amber by 311
7. How We Operate by Gomez from the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack
8. Star Spangled Banner, especially in a ballpark

Eight books I've read recently
I can't put anything here. I haven't really read a leisure book since I started residency. I have big plans, though...

Eight things I've learned this year
1. Facials do a lot to help you look younger.
2. Being chief can be scary but good.
3. I learned about the three grapes that make champagne.
4. Going to Walt Disney World twice in one year doesn't make it any less exciting.
5. I can indeed wean myself off of my caffeine addiction.
6. Research is not for me.
7. See's candy doesn't survive if *I* mail it.
8. I have a lot of flaws.

Eight things that attract me to my best friends

6. yet we have enough in common that forms a good base
7. they understand my crazy schedule and don't blame me for being very busy sometimes
8. kindness

Eight people I'd like to tag
If you're reading this and want to play along, go for it! Let me know you played in a comment, please. :-)

note to self

Don't buy grapes in November. Especially from a cafeteria at a VA hospital...

Thank you. Carry on.

more stalling

I keep meaning to post the Thanksgiving menu, but I keep leaving the list where I am not. :-P All I'll say now is that it was simply. amazing.

So to stall a bit, I'm going to borrow a list of questions from Dawn. It says 50 questions, but some likely got dropped becuase either people didn't want to answer them or they had a cut and paste error. So I'll fill in the blanks!

1. What bill do hate paying the most?
It's not really a bill, but it's kind of a monthly expense, which is what a bill is, so I'm going to say paying for gas. I don't want to get all political, but I hate the idea that with every gallon of gas we use, we're giving money to people who hate us and would likely prefer if we didn't exist.

2. Where was the last place you had a romantic dinner?
It was at Victoria & Albert's at the Grand Floridian Hotel at Walt Disney World. If' you've been reading my blog for any length of time, you'll know we *love* fancy food and wine to go with it, and this was the perfect place for that. Exquisite 4-5 course meal, perfect ambiance, exceptional service; I couldn't find a single thing to pick on!

This one was deleted, so here's my #3: What was the last thing you baked?
Since I don't find myself in the kitchen much, I think I'd have to say it was last Christmas when I baked cookies. And I plan to be there again doing the same very soon!

4. If you could go back and change one thing, what would it be?
I said some very mean things to some of my friends from high school once. I can be a real brat sometimes, and those comments cost me their friendship.

5. Name of your first grade teacher?
Miss Stockle. Man, she was tough. I coasted through kindergarten, and first grade was a huge shock to me. I had to actually try now. Do homework. We had a sit down discussion and she said something I'll never forget: "Never stop until your good is better, and your better is best."

More of my own questions: 6. How do you feel about the whole video game thing?
I am a huge fan of video games. Grew up playing them. Graduated from Atari to Sega to Playstation. Then my brother gave us a PS2 so Daniel could play his zombie games. When he gave it to us, I was still in residency, remembered how I loved playing video games, and resolutely stayed away from it. That is, until recently, when my friend brought over Guitar Hero III and Rockband. O.M.G. Have to try to stop this.

Nichole's question 7. Do you go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, so called "Black Friday"?
If I'm not working I do! I've been able to get some really good deals with all the sales stores have going. There seemed to be better sales last year, but I still made out pretty well this year anyway. As a matter of fact, I'm done shopping for Christmas!!

8. How many colleges have you attended?
four. 1. California State University, Fresno. 2. Fresno Community College (summer classes). 3. California State University, Long Beach (summer conducting course). 4. Tufts University School of Medicine.

9. Why did you choose the shirt you have on right now?
Because I was going to be operating today and I have to wear this while in the OR.

Nichole's question #10. What's one of your favorite scents?
It depends on the time of year. Now it's Christmas trees and the smell of baking. But I always love the smell of fresh sourdough bread.

11. If you could move somewhere and take someone with you where would it be?
I think I'd like to try living in Hawaii.

12. First thought when the alarm went off this morning?
I'll get up and study after a cycle through the snooze button.

13. Last thought before going to sleep last night?
I wish I weren't in such a weird mood... maybe sleep will re-set me.

14. Do you miss being a child?
Sure! Done with school at 3:30, summers and weekends off, get to play with your friends, play video games... being a kid was great.

Nichole's #15. Do you have a "spot" to sit in when you're at home relaxing?
Usually. But I've been known to move around when the need arises.

16. What errand/chore do you despise doing?
Errand: getting the dry cleaning. Chore: cleaning the cat box.

17. If you didn't have to work, would you volunteer?
Absolutely. There are all kinds of people all over the world who don't have access to medical care and need help. It'd be cool to travel and operate on people who otherwise couldn't get surgery.

18. Get up early or rise and shine?
Early! Why waste the day in bed when there is so much fun to be had?

19. What is your favorite cartoon character?
Donald Duck. He's got plenty of spunk yet still knows how to have a good time.

20. Favorite thing to do at night with a girl/guy?
Be sqeezy. Add kitty to make extra squeezy.

21. Have you found real love yet?
Absolutely!

22. When did you first start feeling old?
When I started having medical students rotate on my services more often. They are so young... and scared of everything.

Nichole's #23. Do you have big veins that are easy to stick for blood draws or do they have to dig around for a bit?
I have veins so large on my hands that I've been sitting at a computer, typing, and a passing nurse will actually stop and comment on how big they are and that she wouldn't even need a tourniquet.

Nichole's #24. Do you watch any cartoons now?
I still love cartoons, but they are most definitely for adults. The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park. I occasionally watched Futurama when it was on, but never really got into it. Don't like American Dad at all.

25. What do you get every time you go into Wal-Mart?
I get reminded of just how many people in this country simply don't speak English.

26. Beach or lake?
Being the sun-phobe that I am, I prefer a lake because it implies there is shade nearby. And hiking, which is more fun than swimming.

27. Do you think marriage is an outdated ritual?
I think it is one of the most key elements to our society. And the breakdown in the value of marriage over the last several decades corresponds to the breakdown in the fabric of our society...

28. Do you own property?
Nope. I got an education instead. Yep, my education is as expensive as a freaking house.

29. Favorite guilty pleasure?
My re-discovered love of playing video games! What a horrible time sink *that* is...

30. Favorite movie you wouldn't want anyone to find out about?
Pillow Talk with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. It's a great old movie but chessy as all hell.

31. What's your drink?
Vanilla Coke Zero.

Nichole's #32. Mac or PC?
We just got a mac. I love it! Yay!

Nichole's #33. What annoys you most at work?
People who try to cut corners or shirk their responsibilities. Not to be overly dramatic, but we're not dealing with papers or money here. It's people. Lives. Do your freaking job already. Pretend it's *your* dad.

34. Who from high school would you like to run into?
I think I'd like to see what Keri Rose is up to. She was one of our three valedictorians (yes, we had three people get straight A's and take max honors classes) and wanted to do orthopaedics.

Nichole's #35. What is your handwriting like?
Let me start off by saying that it is LEGIBLE. Hard to believe, but true. Kinda loopy, but not in a rediculously girly way. My normal writing doesn't have a slant to it... just straight up and down. If I'm trying to write more formally, it's slanty and less loopy.

Nichole's #36. What kind of food do you like to eat when you're sick?
Can't beat tomato soup and grilled cheese for when I'm feeling yucchy.

Nichole's #37. Do you wear any jewelry on a regular basis?
Wedding set, left hand. Some kind of silver ring on my right hand, unless I'm all bloated, which is not infrequent for some weird reason. I have to have a necklace on if I'm wearing rings, since I have to take off my rings when I scrub for a case in the operating room. I string my rings on my necklace so they don't get lost. Don't wear a watch because I have enough contraptions hanging off my waist that tell time. And I don't wear earrings because I'm terribly allergic to anything that isn't purest gold or platinum and it's too much of hassle.

38. Worst relationship mistake that you wish you could take back?
Lots... :-P

Nichole's #39. Do you do anything creative?
I have been known to sing. Not just in the shower, either. I make cards, stamp, and occasionally scrapbook.

40. What famous person would you like to have dinner with?
I've love to have a conversation with Mark Twain. What a talker he must have been...

41. Indoors or outdoors?
Indoors. Afraid of the sun, remember?

42. Have you ever crashed your vehicle?
People have crashed into *me.*

Nichole's #43. Hit random on your iPod. What are the first five songs that come up? (Ignore if you don't have an iPod.)
"That Old Black Magic" by Louis Prima. "Liquid Love" by Above & Beyond (trance). "Could Be Anything" by The Eams Era. "Give it to Me" by Timbaland. "Read My Mind" by The Killers.

44. Last book you read?
I'm in the middle of Vanity Fair by William Makepace Thackery. Which I've been in the middle of since last May. Freaking residency...

Nichole's #45. (Man, I can't think of anything else...) Do you like roller coasters?
I like them if they're not too crazy. Like some of the ones at Six Flags Magic Mountain have a straight drop and it looks like you're going to hit the ground. No thanks. But loops and corkscrews are just fine. Oh, and I don't like getting wet, either.

46. Strangest place you've ever brushed your teeth?
um... work?

Nichole's #47. If you're running out of the house to go to the store really quickly, what pair of shoes are you most likely to throw on?
Summer -- wedge sandals. Winter -- brown loafers

48. Do you go to church?
Yep. Every week. Well, almost. ;-)

49. At this point in your life, would you rather start a new career or a new relationship?
I wouldn't change my relationship for anything. And I'd be lying if I've ever wondered what a normal life would be like. Don't get me wrong, I love being a doctor, but sometimes I wonder if it's worth all the sacrifice. I didn't realize just how much sacrifice there was when I started this whole thing.

50. How old are you...
32 and three days!!! :-)

all new turkey day

First off... Happy Thanksgiving!

I wish I could give you all a preview of what miracles Daniel is creating in the kitchen today. Unfortunately, it is a surprise to everyone except the chef! All I know is that we're having turkey. :-P Over the years, we have found various dishes that we just love and we have most of them every Thanksgiving. We'll try one or two new ones, but we have our staples on a rotating basis. I have been assured that this year we will experience flavor combinations we never even dreamed possible!

Plus, to add to the fun while the food is being prepared, I'm going to play, for the first time ever, on a Wii! And it's going to be Guitar Hero 3 with the cordless guitar! I'm so excited.

I hope you all have a wonderful day full of friends and family... and good food! Stay tuned for the full menu tomorrow!

stimulating bitter tonic

Stimulating bitter tonic
Daniel comes from a long line of pharmacists. While he was visiting his grandparents this past weekend, they went looking for old apothecary jars and other medical things that I might appreciate. Can't wait to have an office for this piece!

fridays feast

Feast One Hundred & Sixty Nine

Appetizer
What was your first "real" job?
When I was 16, I was able to get a job selling concessions at the movie theater near my house. Now that I think of it, it was a little sexist in the way they divided the labor. The boys cleaned the theaters after the movie was over and re-stocked the snacks in between. The girls, for the most part, sold concessions and tickets at the box office. I eventally worked my way up to the box office, where I was told by many customers that I handled the money and tickets like a deal in Vegas. ;-)

Soup
Where would go if you wanted to spark your creativity?
There are so *many* places to go around here. It would really depend on what kind of creativity I wanted to spark. I could see the symphony, go to the Getty, walk around the mall and look at fabrics and patterns, go to Disneyland, or get inspired by nature at the ocean or in the foothills on a hike.

Salad
Complete this sentence: I am embarrassed when...
...I have to go out in scrubs. I've had to go to dinner, church, the mall, and probably countless other places in scrubs. Even if there *isn't* blood on them, I don't like doing it.

Main Course
What values did your parents instill in you?
So many that I don't think I'll remember them all. Here are a few: work hard, value education and learning, make special memories for your family, have faith in God.

Dessert
Name three fads from your teenage years.
1. Wearing L.A. Gear tennis shoes with multiple socks so that you could see the colors. The socks had to match your outfit.
2. Big. Bangs.
3. Slinging your backpack over one shoulder *only*. Two shoulders was for geeks.

update

Athalia is totally fine. Ever since she got home the other day, she has been happy, and purring, and hungry. No snot, either. I'm not sure if it's the antibiotics or the wash out of her sinus she had when she was asleep, but to look at her you'd think she's totally healthy.

No results on the cultures yet either. For people cultures, if there is no growth in 5 days, that's it. Nothing's going to grow if it hasn't by then. Well, unless it's yeast. Then it's 30 days. But she's just checking for bacteria. I wonder if it's the same way with kitties?

November 13, 2007

home again

The abdominal ultrasound was negative for a mass, which is what we were all worried about. A little thickened stomach lining and gallbladder, but that could just be from chronic irritation. Today we'll start a gastric motility agent called metaclopramide. I use it all the time for my patients with nausea and vomiting.

Next is the teeth. All she has left now are the two canines on the bottom and two upper molars. Nearly toothless older kitty. That's okay. They don't chew anyway. However, on the dental x-rays, they found a mass in the sinus on the left. That's the snotty side. She said it could be chronic inflammation, infection, or a tumor. She flushed out her sinus and got a bunch of junk out. Here's the plan from here on out:

1. Wait for the culture and sensitivities to come back. That will tell us if there is an active infection, which organism it is, and which antibiotics it is sensitive to so we can tailor the anitbiotic therapy.
2. If that is negative, she'll send a specimen for yeast culture. These take longer, but masses can be caused by fungal infections. Treat if positive.
3. If all that is negative and her symptoms have not resolved, she'll need an MRI of her face. Which means more anesthesia because even some *humans* can't stay still long enough for an MRI.

Needless to say, both me and my wallet hope this first round of antibiotics does the trick, especially after the bill we've accumulated in the last two days...

my kitty is at the vet

Yesterday I took the kitties in for a long-overdue check up. Elizabeth was fine, as we all know. Got her vaccine for indoor kitties to help prevent sarcoma or something like that. Poor Athalia needed more work done. She's been a very snotty nosed kitty for about 6-8 months or so. It got a bit worse with the smoke from all the fires. So they also swabbed her nose.

Another interesting fact is that she never got her adult teeth in. She's had several of the old kitten teeth extracted because they were rotten or loose, but the vet told me that she needed to take a better look at them under ansesthesia. And, because tooth sockets are very close to sinuses, an underlying infection in her teeth may be causing sinusitis. So while she was asleep, they'd get dental x-rays.

Then there's the vomiting. She does the binge-purge thing a lot of cats do, and we work around it by feeding her a teaspoon full of food every 20 minutes. But occassionally, maybe once a month, she'll get a whole meal and be fine. Then at the next meal, after her first serving, she vomit a very large amount of undigested, foul-smelling food. *That's* what the vet was worried about. To check it out, she's getting an abdominal ultrasound too.

I get to pick her up soon. I hope she's ok. Poor thing.
